Vine species --> 2 types

  • Vitis Vinifera.

This is the main Eurasian species. It produces nearly all the grapes used in winemaking and has been used for winemaking for thousand years.
  • American vines.

There are three important species of vine native to North America. They are usually not used to produce grapes for the wine industry. Only the roots of the American vines are used. Reason is that those American roots are resistant to the Phylloxera (will be explained in one of the following blogs).

Difference between single varietal and blend -->

  • Single varietal.

That means that a wine or sparkling wine is made with only one grape variety. Of course, there are exceptions. In some rules and regulations, the wine laws, is allowed to call it only by one grape variety name, but there is < 5% other grapes in.
  • Blend.

When a wine is made from 2 and more different grape varieties, and the smallest amount of wine is from a grape variety what is higher than 5% then we call a wine or sparkling wines a blend.
