Austria


Austria is well know for the quality of its dry wines, from the grape variety Grüner Veltliner, and from the Riesling. Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch are the local varieties for the outstanding red wines. However sweet botrytised, Austria has also, made from Welschriesling.
The majority of wine is PDO and is called Qualitätswein. Qualitätswein is divided into the following qualities. Qualitätswein from a generic region, Qualitätswein from a specific region - called DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), and Qualitätswein from a specific region - Non DAC. PGI wines are Landwein. Wines without geographical indication are named Wein.
